What is the difference between Sports Therapy and Physiotherapy?
Much of the basic training is the same for Sports Therapy as it is for Physiotherapy. There is a lot of overlap and much will depend on a practitioners training and experience. In terms of undergraduate training, physiotherapy is more about getting someone out of a hospital bed and back to work. Sports Therapy (like an Athletic Trainer in the US) is focused on getting someone who is relatively able but can’t enjoy or get back to their favourite exercise or sport properly, because of recurring pain or dysfunction.
What can I expect in a Sports Therapy treatment session? What training / experience do you have?
Mark Skoyles became 1st team Sports Therapist for Marlow Football Club in 1998, gaining experience in trauma management and sport specific rehabilitation techniques, a position he held for 15 years.
He gained a Sports Therapy BSc (Hons) in 2011 with focus on diagnosis, treatment and rehab of musculoskeletal injuries. Add to that advanced qualifications in Sports Massage, Myofascial Release, exercise physiology, running & movement biomechanics, L3 Personal Training and L3 Pilates Instruction means Mark has intimate knowledge of human movement analysis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries.
A treatment session normally includes refined osteopathic and physio techniques combined with customised exercise prescription & advice which is designed to give you long term relief from injury and pain. Read reviews from our previous clients here
What can I expect from a Sports Massage session?
Louise Harman is our Sports & Remedial Massage Therapist. She has a BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and a Level 5 Sports Massage and Remedial Therapist qualification from the Oxford School of Sports Massage (OSSM). She treats people who participate in fitness, as well as those suffering from occupational problems that are not sport-related. Louise uses a range of techniques including deep tissue massage, soft tissue release (STR) and muscle energy techniques (METs).
What is initial consultation like?
A full treatment is included on your first visit. At beginning if you’re wanting a sports or deep tissue massage and have no injuries then it will take just a few minutes to take down some contact details and a short medical history.
If you have an existing injury we also need a chat about the symptoms and history of the problem. Various orthopedic and movement tests could be used to assess the injury / pain before any treatment is started.
How many sessions will I need?
It is difficult to predict before seeing someone but generally: if it’s an acute problem i.e injury / pain which started within a couple of weeks then only 1 – 4 sessions would be needed. If its a more chronic problem (longer lasting or on-going) then expect 2 – 10 sessions to resolve the issue. We do have clients and athletes who see us regularly (weekly – monthly) for maintenance treatments.
How long is a session?
You can book Sports Therapy sessions in for 30, 45 or 60 minutes. Sessions are all tailored to individual needs however as a guide for first appointments: –
- 30 mins: For ‘simple’ acute injuries – sprained ankle/ elbow assessment, treatment and rehab.
- 45 mins: Most common session booked. We can assess, treat and provide a comprehensive rehab program for single issue musculoskeletal injuries.
- 60mins: For more complex or multiple problem chronic pains. A longer assessment and treatment session is recommended.
For a Sports Massage / soft tissue session, you can book in for 30, 60 or 90 minutes. Sessions are all tailored to individual needs however as a guide: –
- 30 mins: For a sports massage of either legs OR back. Also if you have a acute injury on one leg or arm that needs to be assessed and treated. Customised exercise program maybe prescribed.
- 60mins: A more focused massage session of lower limbs or upper body. Or if no specific problems, an extended general session to cover upper and lower body.
- 90mins: A sports or deep tissue massage that includes legs, hips, back, shoulders, arms, chest and neck. Customised exercise program maybe prescribed.
